We have recently posted Matrix Maker X 1.1.6, the newest version of our Macintosh application designed for use in the composition and/or analysis of twelve-tone music.

NOTE: This version replaces earlier with a new Universal Binary application that runs natively on both Power PC and Intel Macintosh computers under Mac OS X. V 1.1.6 also adds the ability to print the analysis on a separate page and moves to a "drag install" rather than installer-based installation method, with the Matrix TrueType font included within the application package rather than installed separately in the fonts folder.

Matrix Maker X is a continuation of the development of Matrix maker, previously available for use with Macintosh operating systems from System 7.5.1 through OS 9.x. Matrix Maker X is a Mac OS X-native application built with the Cocoa API and will run on only Mac OS X 10.1.5 or later. Matrix Maker X 1.1.6 is compatible with Mac OS 10.5.x ("Leopard").

Matrix Maker X is designed to facilitate the easy creation and formatting of twelve-tone matrices (12 x 12 arrays) used in the composition and/or analysis of twelve-tone music, as well as the creation and formatting of 7 x 7, 6 x 6, and 5 x 5 matrices (or, for that matter, matrices of any dimension from 2 x 2 through 12 x 12). Any number of matrices can be created without exiting and re-initializing the application; this is particularly advantageous if the program is being used in a networked environment. Extensive documentation in HTML format can be viewed by utilizing any of the current Macintosh browsers.

Matrix Maker X can not only create and format matrices: it can also analyze the properties of the set. The application can check a set for hexachordal and tetrachordal combinatoriality, all-interval properties, and R- and RI-degeneracy and can also do limited analyses of hexachords and sets of other than twelve or six members; a future update will include trichordal combinatoriality as well.

Matrix Maker X is shareware, $7.00 US, and serial numbers are distributed through eSellerate. Information concerning registration can be found in the "Help" files included with the application. Current users are entitled to a free upgrade; v 1.0 serial numbers will work with v 1.1.x as well

The Matrix Maker X 1.1.6 file posted here has been checked by Intego Virus Barrier X and has been found to be virus-free.
